Sign in with the right Microsoft account
What to do when Microsoft asks whether you mean your work or personal account.
Many people have two Microsoft accounts, one from work and one of their own. If you use the wrong one, your files, email and calendar look empty or missing.
- Your work or school account uses your business email address, and your files are stored under your business.
- A personal account is your own, such as one ending in outlook.com or hotmail.com.
- When Microsoft asks which account, choose Work or school account.
- If you signed in with the wrong one, select your profile picture, sign out, and sign in again with your work email.
- In Word or Excel, select File, then Account, and check the email address shown.
Good to know
Keep work files in your work account. Files saved in a personal account are outside your business, and we cannot help protect or recover them.
