You cannot sign in to your work computer

Checks to try when Windows will not accept your password or PIN.

Updated September 21, 2026

Take a moment before you try again. Too many wrong guesses can lock your account.

  1. Look for a Caps Lock warning on the sign-in screen, and check the keyboard layout shown at the bottom right.
  2. Type your password slowly. Select the eye icon in the password box to see what you typed.
  3. Make sure the computer is on Wi-Fi or a cable. If you changed your password on your phone or another computer, connect first and try the new password. Some computers accept the old one until they have been online.
  4. Check that your password works on the web. Go to office.com and sign in. If that fails, follow Reset your Microsoft 365 password.
Careful

Stop after three or four wrong tries. Repeated wrong guesses can lock your account for a while.
