Getting started with a password manager
What it does, and how to use one without stress.
A password manager keeps all your passwords in one locked vault. It creates long random passwords and fills them in when you sign in.
How to start
- Choose one product with your business. Ask us which one to pick.
- Make a long master password from several unrelated words. This is the only password you need to remember. Never use it anywhere else.
- Turn on multi-factor sign-in for the vault.
- Save new passwords as you sign in, and let the manager create new ones when you change a password.
- Update your most important accounts first, such as email and banking.
Careful
If you forget the master password, the vault may not be recoverable. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe, away from your computer.
Good to know
Do not keep business passwords in a spreadsheet, on a sticky note or in your phone's notes app.
