Use a network cable for a steadier connection

When Wi-Fi is not enough, plug in.

Updated September 21, 2026

A cable is faster and steadier than Wi-Fi. It helps with video calls, large files and anything that must not drop.

  1. Plug one end of a network cable into your computer, or into its dock or adapter, and the other into a wall port or the network switch.
  2. Wait a few seconds. Windows shows a network icon that looks like a small computer.
  3. You can leave Wi-Fi on. Windows prefers the wired connection.
Good to know

Many thin laptops have no network port. A USB network adapter or a dock adds one. Ask us what fits.

Careful

Do not plug a cable into a port you do not recognize, and never connect two ports on the same switch to each other.
