Fix slow or dropping Wi-Fi

Quick checks to find out whether the problem is your device, the Wi-Fi or your internet.

First, find out who is affected

Ask a coworker, or try a second device such as your phone on the same Wi-Fi. If only your computer has trouble, the problem is probably your computer. If everyone has trouble, the problem is the network or your internet provider.

If it is just you

  1. Turn Wi-Fi off and on again. On Windows, use the Wi-Fi tile in the quick settings panel next to the clock.
  2. Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point, and away from thick walls and metal shelving.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Forget the network and reconnect. Open Settings, choose Network & internet, then Wi-Fi, then Manage known networks. Select the network, choose Forget, then connect again with the Wi-Fi password.

If everyone is affected

Call or text us at (231) 884-7146 before you restart or unplug any network equipment. The cause is often at your internet provider, and restarting can erase clues we need.

Careful

Never press the reset button on a router, firewall or Wi-Fi device. A reset erases the settings we set up for you.
