Set an out of office reply

Tell people you are away, and turn the message on and off.

Updated September 21, 2026

An automatic reply answers anyone who emails you while you are away. Each person gets it once.

In Outlook on the web

  1. Go to outlook.office.com and sign in.
  2. Select the Settings gear at the top right, then View all Outlook settings.
  3. Choose Mail, then Automatic replies.
  4. Turn on automatic replies. Choose Send replies only during a time period and set the start and end, so the reply turns off by itself.
  5. Type your message. Select Send replies outside your organization if customers should get it too. Then select Save.

In the Outlook app

In classic Outlook, select File, then Automatic Replies. In the new Outlook, open Settings and look for Automatic replies.

Good to know

Say when you are back and who to contact for urgent things. Anyone who emails you will see the message, so leave out travel plans and personal details.
