An email is stuck in your Outbox

Why a message will not send, and how to get it moving.

Updated September 21, 2026

A message sits in the Outbox when Outlook cannot send it. The usual causes are no internet, an attachment that is too large, or Outlook working offline.

  1. Check your internet connection by opening a website.
  2. Look at the bottom of the Outlook window. If it says Working Offline or Disconnected, select the Send/Receive tab, then Work Offline to turn it off.
  3. Open the message from the Outbox, remove large attachments and send it again. A link works better, as explained in Send a file that is too big for email.
  4. Close and reopen Outlook, then try again.
Good to know

Most email systems reject messages larger than about 20 MB once the attachments are included.
